EXT. INDEPENDENCE – NIGHT – ESTABLISHING

The mining moon is dark and gray. A light rain falls. SERENITY sits at the MINE ENTRANCE, near a grouping of RUSTY BUILDINGS – barracks, warehouses, loading bays and offices. Banks of lights atop steel poles light the area from above.

INT. SERENITY CARGO BAY – CONTINUOUS

The cargo bay is filled by a few dozen LARGE SPOOLS OF CHAINS, massive enough that four people would be needed to roll them. The spools are strapped down, and JAYNE and BOOK are busy unfastening them. Kaylee stands on the UPPER catwalk, looking down.

    KAYLEE
…pulleys and such. Big old pulleys for heftin’ minin’ equipment. That’s gotta be what they’re for, right?

    JAYNE
    I don’t know. That’s a lotta pulleys.

    BOOK
Mines are deep, especially uranium ones. Some can go all the way to the core.

    JAYNE
I know what I’d use chains for!
    (lewd grin)
    If you catch my meanin’.

    KAYLEE
    (giggling)
    Jayne!

The sound of CLINKING CHAINS comes from the AIRLOCK RAMP, preceding two SECURITY GUARDS, followed by a group of sixteen RAGGED MEN, who are shackled about the ankles. The chain gang, looking wet and miserable, includes a TEENAGE BOY, and a MAN resting his hands on the boy’s shoulders protectively. Behind this apparent father-son pair, an OLDER MAN makes eye contact with Book. A CROSS ON A THIN CHAIN hangs around his neck.

Book and Jayne exchange a look.

    JAYNE
Seems I weren’t too far off with the whole bondage-thing, Shepherd.

    BOOK
    Seems so.

INT. CHAVEZ’S OFFICE – SECONDS LATER

CHAVEZ, forties, short, mustachioed, stands before a window overlooking the slave barracks, loading bays, and mine entrance. Serenity can be seen, and the spools of chains are being rolled down the ramp by groups of ragged men.

Mal and Zoe look around the office, noticing a BROWNCOAT and INDEPENDENT FLAG displayed on one wall of the office.

    CHAVEZ
Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds! And Zoe Alleyne! It is an honor to finally meet you both.

    ZOE
    It’s Mrs. Washburne now.

    MAL
And Captain Reynolds. Or Mister Reynolds. Or Mal, if you consider me a friend. As far as Sergeant Reynolds…
    (looks at the flag)
War’s over, Mr. Chavez. Ain’t no use clingin’ onto old titles.

    CHAVEZ
    Please, call me Luis.
    (looks to the flag)
And you are right. Old titles… We should be rid of them. But old ideals, they never die.

    MAL
    Like freedom?

    CHAVEZ
Yes. That’s what this place is all about. Independence. Freedom from the Alliance.

    MAL
Freedom period’s what I fought for.
    (beat)
Ain’t no man oughta live under the heel of another.

    Chavez smiles.

    CHAVEZ
I assume you are referring to my workforce?

    MAL
Am I? Don’t believe I mentioned them. Should I have?

Chavez sits down behind his desk and reclines.

    CHAVEZ
Have you heard of the term “chain gang?”

EXT. ELYSIAN HILLS – FIELD – NIGHT – ESTABLISHING

A broken field, littered with bodies, debris, and other remnants of warfare, is the valley between hills. In the distance, EXPLOSIONS and SOUNDS OF BATTLE can be heard.

TITLE: Elysian Hills, Boros – Seven Years Ago

    EXT. ELYSIAN HILLS – NIGHT

ZOE and MAL rush down a hill and onto the field, Zoe looking ahead, Mal covering the rear. At the base of the hill, they pause, catching their breath.

    ZOE
    Think we lost them?

Mal nods, then a single GUNSHOT cracks from the next hill. It is followed by a second shot, then a third. This is not the sound of battle, but rather single, paced shots.

Zoe grimaces as Mal rushes across the field toward the sound.

EXT. ELYSIAN HILLS – HILLTOP – NIGHT

Mal and Zoe cautiously crawl up to the top of a hill as another gunshot sounds.

    They look across to

    THE NEXT HILL

A dozen ALLIANCE SOLDIERS surround a pair of kneeling Browncoat PRISONERS. Four other prisoners are already dead.

An OFFICER stands behind the first living prisoner, a pistol pointed at the prisoner’s head.

    OFFICER
    (grim, smug)
You give me trouble, you die.

    He shoots the prisoner dead.

    OFFICER (cont’d)
    [Feces-colored vagrant.]

The Officer moves to the other prisoner.

    OFFICER (cont’d)
How about you? You want to live? I’ll ask you once. Where’s the comm array?

The prisoner doesn’t look up, but is clearly terrified. The Officer blows him away and moves to the final prisoner.

    ON THE FIRST HILL

Mal looks on, horrified. He and Zoe are far enough away, and well-concealed enough that they are not in danger of being easily spotted, but there is little they can do.

    MAL
Jesus in Heaven, [have mercy on him, for I sure won't]!

    Mal cocks his gun.

    ZOE
There's too many of them. And we’ve got to warn HQ that they know about the comm array.

Another gunshot from the next hill.

    ZOE (cont’d)
    It’s too late.

Mal knows she right, but doesn’t want to accept it.

    ZOE (cont’d)
    Not now, Mal. Another time.

He nods and closes his eyes. Zoe looks across the hill, studying the Officer as he stands over the dead prisoners.

EXT. SPACE – VISTAS – ESTABLISHING

VISTAS is a Saturn-line GAS GIANT, surrounded by dozens of small MOONS and a system of RINGS composed of icy debris floating on a river-like torrent.

EXT. SPACE – THE CAROUSEL – ESTABLISHING

THE CAROUSEL is a large, run-down looking space station resting at the inner edge of the planetary rings. The space station resembles three wagon wheels stacked on top of one another, which a large central hub, and each of the spokes leading to an airlock.

The Carousel can accommodate four dozen SHIPS, and about half that number are currently docked there, with some of the larger ships tethered by lines rather than attached directly to the airlocks.

SERENITY, pretty much average for size and appearance of the ships, is docked on the “space” side of lowest level of the station (away from the planetary rings).

INT. THE CAROUSEL – THE HUB – NIGHT

The HUB is a massive, chaotic swap meet, practically the size of a football field. It seems that anything can be had here, for the right price. Illegal arms, small vehicles, livestock, even slaves are being bought, sold and auctioned by the crowd.

The Hub has a variety of large entrances, each of which leads down one of the “spokes” of the lowest level.

MAL REYNOLDS and INARA stroll through the crowd, looking for someone.

    MAL
    You see him?

    INARA
In this crowd? Jayne doesn’t exactly stand out…

    MERCHANT
Fighting cocks! Getcher fighting cocks right here!

Inara pauses as a ROOSTER runs out in front of them.

    MAL
You want one? Could get it for you as a going away present.
    (beat)
Which reminds me… When are you going away? Thought you were gettin’ off on New Melbourne. Been there and gone and it seems you’re still on my boat.

    INT. SERENITY – INARA’S SHUTTLE – DAY

INARA pulls aside a tapestry to reveal a SMALL SAFE. After punching in a code, she opens the door and retrieves a METALLIC GUN BOX. She checks inside it. It holds the LASSITER, resting protected atop the soundproofing foam bedding.

    MAL (OS)
    Your clients on the way?

She looks up at MAL, who stands at the threshold to her shuttle.

    INARA
Yes. Much to my surprise, I did not have to explain why the auction could not be held on the Cortex. While I did not use the term, I believe they understand how black this market is…
(hands Mal the box and rubs her neck)
…and how it’s best not to take chances.

    MAL
    (seeing her discomfort)
    How’re you healin’?

    INARA
    My neck’s… better...

    MAL
    Let me see.

Mal sets down the box and moves closer.

    INARA
What? Has Simon been giving you lessons?

    MAL
Come on. I got concerns. You’re still part of my crew.

Inara does not meet Mal's gaze and turns, lifting up her hair. Mal steps up behind her and looks down at her neck.

    INARA
So I’m part of the crew now? For how long?

    MAL
That’s your call, ain’t it? Which begs the question, when’re you gonna tell the others?

    An awkward beat.

    MAL (cont’d)
Oh yeah. Looks like it’s healin’ up just fine.

    INARA
It still feels numb sometimes… like pins and… needles…
(drops her hair and turns around)
    I’m fine.

    MAL
Inara… I’m sorry. I let my guard down. Shoulda never—

    INARA
    It’s okay. We’re all okay.
    (she smiles)
Some not as pretty as before…

    MAL
    Never say that. You are—

    INARA
I was talking about Shepherd Book.

    MAL
    Book… Right.

    INARA
    (smiling)
Don’t you have some work to do? Your end of things?

Mal backs up and picks up the gun box.

    MAL
Can’t have a black market auction without a shady, backroom auction house, can we?
    (walks out)
    Just wouldn’t be right.

INT. SERENITY – CARGO HOLD – DAY

Mal comes down the stairs from the UPPER CATWALK. ZOE and JAYNE are waiting for him, checking their weapons.

    JAYNE
    We ready to go?

    MAL
    Told you, you ain't going.
    (beat)
Might find yourself another pretty lady wants to get us killed.

EXT. PERSEPHONE – EAVESDOWN DOCKS – DAY

It’s a sunny day in the bustling bazaar of Eavesdown Docks as MAL, ZOE, and JAYNE work their way through the crowd.

MAL: Three hours! Three hours we wait in his parlor and for what? “Hello, welcome to my mansion, please won't you have a seat, and some smelly cheese too. Oh, and by the way, get out of my house, you thief”!

JAYNE (picking at his teeth): Ain’t nothin’ wrong with free cheese, Mal, no matter how it smells.

MAL (ignoring Jayne): He knows we’re thieves! But the second we show him that damn broken laser, he clams up.

ZOE: He's got his reasons, sir. If I were him, I wouldn't go near the Lassiter, either.

MAL (not particularly listening): Now he's too good to be seen with us. Y’know, Warrick Harrow used to be my very favorite lord with a sash.

It’s a particularly busy day and all three of them are periodically jostled by PASSERS-BY.

    ZOE: Used to be?

MAL: Well, he still is. Sometimes he really has a pair, but today was like he was gelded. Just never thought something fits under my coat would be so tough to pass along.

ZOE: You could have taken Inara up on her offer to help sell it.

MAL: Inara? Would you give that a rest! She so big on helpin’ us, how come she ain't here? She was supposed to come by and change his paranoid mind to my liking.

They stop to let a MAN leading two LLAMAS pass; Jayne eyes the llamas with suspicion.

MAL (cont'd): She didn't show because she didn't want to show. Made me look like a gorram fool.

ZOE: She's scared, Mal. Probably doesn’t want to risk running into Atherton Wing.

MAL (Sarcastic): Ath! You think he's still holding a grudge against us, too?

JAYNE: Him and about a hundred others. Maybe you should start killin’ 'em, Mal. Wouldn't have to watch our backs so gorram much.

MAL: Can't kill everyone don't agree with us, Jayne. Badger’d be the first to go, were that the case. We walk away, and it's their choice to keep a grudge. Nothing I can do about that.

    JAYNE: You could kill 'em.

    Mal gives him a look.

Zoe spots INARA in the crowd, working her way toward them.

    ZOE: Speak of the devil.

Jayne and Mal put their hands to their guns, looking for targets. Zoe gives them her best “Why am I saddled with children?” look.

As Inara approaches, Mal closes the distance, his posture belligerent.

    MAL: Where were you?

INARA: I had some business that took longer than planned. Did Lord Harrow mention my absence?

MAL: ‘Course he mentioned! Do I look like a whore?

Inara manages not to slap him.

INARA: That's exactly the kind of comment I don't miss when you’re not around, Captain.

Jayne laughs. Inara and Zoe begin to walk away.

A KID, carrying a snatched PURSE, rushes through the crowd, angling toward Jayne.

Mal and Jayne move to follow the women.

The Kid slams into Jayne’s back.

    JAYNE: Hey!

Jayne whips around in annoyance, grabs the Kid with one hand and the purse with the other. The others aren’t aware of this happening.

Jayne looks at the purse, which looks expensive, then at the Kid, who looks dirt poor. He lets the Kid go.

JAYNE (cont’d): Get outta here ‘fore I gut you.

Jayne begins to paw through the purse.

    ANA (OS): Oh, thank goodness!

Jayne looks up. ANA, 30-ish, attractive but not beautiful, dark hair cut short, dressed in expensive clothes matching the purse, approaches.

ANA: Thank you for stopping that thief.
